Essentials Acetyl L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is an amino acid responsible for cellular energy, substrate availability and fatty acid transportation.
More specifically, orally consumed ALCAR is used to increase the levels of Carnitine Palmitoyltransferase (CPT) in the body, which is an enzyme responsible for shuttling long chain fatty acids (LCFA), which have been broken down from their stored sites, into the working portion of the muscle known as the mitochondria.
Increasing the delivery of LCFA’s into the mitochondria allows for greater, more efficient use of fats as fuel, which may result in an:
- Increase in fat loss
- Increase in fatty acid use during exercise
- A reduction in carbohydrate depletion
Furthermore, by attaching L-Carnitine to an acetyl group, bioavailability is improved through oral consumption due to its capability of crossing the blood brain barrier.
In doing so, on top of its fat loss benefits, ALCAR also supports the biosynthesis of Acetyl Choline in the brain, which is known as the learning neurotransmitter and can enhance general cognitive performance.
